Naturopathy is a medical system, like Ayurveda or Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has its own way of viewing health, sickness, and healing.
What Is Disease According to Naturopathy?
In conventional medicine, disease is often seen as something you “have,” like owning a phone. It is treated as a condition that is separate from you—something that you catch, or more accurately, that catches you.
Naturopathy, however, has a more empowering perspective: a disease is not separate from you—you and your disease are one. It is like a state of being, or a process you are going through.
How Is This More Empowering?
Because to heal, you are not fighting a separate entity—one that has already outsmarted you by bypassing your defenses, invading, and taking control of your body.
Instead, when you and the disease are one, then to heal, all you have to do is change yourself. When you address the underlying causes within yourself—your habits, environment, your internal balance—your health will change with you.
What About Germs, Viruses, and Genetic Diseases?
Germs and viruses affect everyone, but they can only thrive in a body that provides the right environment for them. So when your internal environment is healthy, disease can’t kick in.
Research increasingly shows that most illnesses aren’t strictly genetic, but are influenced by lifestyle and environment. Only when the body is weakened do “bad genes” manifest as symptoms.
How Does a Naturopath Help You Heal?
Healing begins with understanding who you are—your history, environment, your habits.
As a Naturopathic Nutritional Consultant, I give a lot of attention to your diet, but so do many other specialists working within the naturopathic field. Why this emphasis on food? Because diet plays a crucial role in overall health.
The Importance of Diet
Your body runs on enzymes—about 75,000 of them. They create energy, digest food, remove waste, produce hormones, neurotransmitters, and lots of other cool stuff.
To maintain health within your body, it is crucial that these enzyme systems function properly. And these enzymes depend on vitamins and minerals from your diet. So without proper nutrition, enzyme activity declines, which leads to fatigue, poor digestion, poor overall health, and even depression.
Besides being low on certain nutrients, you can also get toxins into your body. Now, from your body’s point of view, a toxin is anything that prevents its normal functioning. Processed foods can contain such substances, but also natural foods taken in excess, or veggies sprayed with synthetic pesticides, plastic bags, and some cosmetics can have the same toxic effect.
Then we have smoking, not exercising, alcohol, stress, etcetera. All of these prevent you from thriving because they harm your health.
Detoxing to Heal
So a key aspect of naturopathic healing is removing toxins from your body and strengthening it by adding missing nutrients through improving your diet.
And, very important: I do not like fasting! Your body needs nutrients to be strong and to be able to clean itself.
I do like herbs and supplements. They are great allies on a healing journey. Still, the most important thing is to eat well, consistently.
In short:
Naturopathy takes a personalized approach to healing by addressing the root causes of your symptoms. It focuses on cleansing your body of toxins, empowering its natural healing abilities, and building healthy habits to prevent disease and to create a fulfilling life.
